H2O2, the wonderful molecule of Hydrogen Peroxide.


The molcule of H2O2 happens to be quite polar, with the oxygen ends being extremely negative and the hydrogen ends being positive.  Hydrogen Peroxides AX form is an AX2E2, meaning that is bent with 109.5 degree angles.  Since H2O2 happens to be a polar molcule, several intermolecular forces can occur when the molecule bonds with itself.  First, london dispersion will occur, because the electrons are moving around so quickly that the the molecule can be become charged in one particular area for a very brief instant.  Bonds formed from london dispersion, however, are very weak.  Unlike london dispersion that occurs between any element and compound, dipole-dipole bonds only occur in polar molecules.  The Hydrogen atoms have a positive charge and the oxygen atoms have negative charges.  When two molecules of H2O2 come in contact, the hydrogen atoms will be drawn to the oxygen atoms, and the oxygen atoms will be drawn to the hydrogen atoms.  These dipole-dipole bonds will serve as much stronger bonds than london dispersion bonds.  The last of the intermolecular forces associated with hydrogen peroxide is hydrogen bonding.  Hydrogen bonding is possible for two reasons.  One, there is hydrogen prestant and two, Oxygen is one of only three atoms that can hydrogen bonded.  Somewaht similar to dipole-dipole, when the two moleclues of H2O2 come in contact, the hydrogen atoms will be drawn to the oxygen atoms and the same for oxygen to hydrogen.  However, what makes it different is that the bonds between hydrogen and oxygen will keep breaking and reconnecting with different atoms very rapidly.  Hydrogen bonds serve as the strongest in bonds of the intermolecular forces.

Hydrogen Peroxide is a very versatile compound and is used effectivly for many different jobs.  Many people are familar with hydrogen peroxide from using it as a disifectant for cuts.  The colorless liquid of hydrogen peroxide can be applied to a wound to provide protection from bacteriea, however, if more than 8% of the solution is H2O2, it can be corrosive to the skin.  higher volumes of hydrogen peroxide are used as bleaching agents in anything from hair to wood, and even steel.  Hydrogen perroxide can even be used as a rocket propellent.  Hydrogen peroxide can be found in most basements, as it is used in laundry detergents.  Like most polar compounds, water is the main solvent of H2O2.  Hydrogen peroxide is a compound that serves many important purposes and its used constantly everyday all around the world.

    Also the intermolecular forces listed above are all correct.
    The molecule is polar because its charges aren't distributed evenly, so good job on that.
